I was coming out of an abusive marriage when, early in the new year of 2015, I heard a radio DJ ask listeners what their defining word for the year would be. I didn’t even realize this was a thing people did — but the question stopped me in my tracks.
I began asking myself deeper questions:
Who do I want to be?
What do I want to see for myself?
How do I want to define my life?
At the time, I no longer wanted to be seen as “a shell of my old self,” something I had been told for years.
“Oh, you used to be so cheerful, so gregarious, so motivated. What happened?”
What happened was life — and I was ready to reclaim myself.
I wanted to feel brilliant, bold, beautiful, and empowered.
I wanted to improve my knowledge and skills and radiate from within — brilliant.
I wanted to feel less afraid. Not fearless, because that felt unrealistic, but more sure of myself — bold.
And yes, I wanted to feel beautiful. Pretending otherwise would be dishonest. But more than appearance, I wanted to feel beautiful from the inside out — kinder to myself, kinder to others.
I wanted to treat my body with more compassion through nutrition and movement, but most importantly, through my words. I wanted to be a beautiful person.
And I wanted to empower myself to choose this life — every single day.
In 2020, I had these words tattooed on the inside of my forearm.
By no means am I a perfect example of them, but I strive to be a little better every day. Every decision that aligns with these values breathes new light into the free-feeling version of myself. Every time I wear clothes that make me light up inside. Every time I remind myself that I do not live for others’ opinions. Every time I accept my body — curves, stretch marks, scars, and all. Every moment I walk as me, and only me, with my head held high.
That is when I live as my brilliant, bold, beautifully empowered self.
I will continue to strive for this — for myself. I know how incredible it feels when I do. And because of that, I hope to live as one example, and in doing so, inspire others to choose themselves too.
